The Azalea Festival Youth Committee "AFYC" consists of New Hanover County high school students. These students meet weekly in order to produce the Azalea Festival Princess Scholarship Program. This scholarship program, along with Youth activities associated with the Azalea Festival, costs approximately $28,000.
The AFYC officers and general membership create a "game plan" with the help of their two advisors, then follow through with fund-raising events in order to raise money needed. Fundraisers include car washes, yard sales, candy sales, raffle tickets, and Princess Program ad sales.
As they prepare for the Scholarship Program, each member volunteers for a committee. AFYC committees are responsible for every detail of the Scholarship Program, including but not limited to, set design, flowers, gifts for judges and winners, food, entertainment, providing assistance to each of our contestants and to our judges, and general manpower.
The Azalea Festival Youth Committee develops a wonderful sense of community, as well as organizational, teamwork and leadership skills that make this program a success. Please visit out Scholarship page to find out more.
The Scholarship Program is open to any Senior High School girl in New Hanover County. Each school has received, or will receive, a registration packet that contains a sign-up sheet. There is a $50 registration fee for each contestant.
