How many bands can you think of that, decades into their career, are still capable of springing surprises, of blazing fresh trails, creating new music that is up there with the imperishable songs that first propelled them to fame, fortune and critical acclaim? It’s an interesting exercise, and a brief one – a list you can make on the fingers of one hand. In 2015, Duran Duran will cement their place in that illustrious grouping with a new studio album – their 14th, no less – that burnishes their role in the story of pop, and puts the many young pretenders whose music they have influenced firmly in their place. As part of a major new recording deal with Warner Bros. Records, Paper Gods starts the next chapter in the history of the band, with a host of A-list collaborators – including Nile Rodgers, Mark Ronson, Mr Hudson, Janelle Monáe, John Frusciante, Kiesza and Davide Rossi – joining the party. “We found a whole new level of inspiration on this album,” says the band’s keyboardist and aesthetic overlord, Nick Rhodes. “We were talking the other day about artists that have been around for a long time – our contemporaries and some older ones, and there’s only a handful of the latter now, still out there playing shows. And we were saying, ‘What albums did they make this far down the line that we own?’ And that was a difficult one.”

Simon Le Bon has a theory as to why the band are still friends, and still making vital, compelling music, 37 years after Duran Duran first formed in Birmingham. “I think with some artists, as they get into extended careers, it’s like climbing up a rock-face – they start to look down. If you do that, musically, you’re pretty much dead in the water. You can hear it when someone’s thought about it just a little too much, or tried to write something that they think people will like, rather than something that turns them on. We’ve always written music that turns us on; we’ve never tried to tailor it to any kind of taste.” Band politics play a role, too, he says. “I think part of our strength is the tension in our music, which probably comes from the tension within the band. When you’re young, you’re not scared of upsetting people, and actually we can still push that sometimes. But harsh words are forgiven. Ultimately, we know that we will fight for each other, whatever the situation. We stick together. Nick and I can fight tooth and nail, over a lyric, or a musical part. And you would think in those moments that we hate each other’s guts, but really we love each other.”


Concert Venue Rules

About the Venue
The Miller Lite Main Stage is located at 701 N. Front Street Wilmington NC 28401 (adjacent to the Schwartz Center). Gates will open two hours prior to show time (subject to change).

Parking
Parking Decks:

  • The City’s Market Street Deck, 2nd Street Deck, and County parking decks will be $7/day to park; cash and bank cards accepted. One should anticipate possible delays upon entry and exit during high-volume times
  • Market Street Parking Deck – 115 Market Street (Intersection of Market and 2nd Streets)
  • 2nd Street Parking Deck – 114 North 2nd Street (Between Chestnut and Princess Streets)
  • Library Parking Deck – 200 N. 2nd Street
  • Cape Fear Community College Parking Decks – cash only
  • Nutt Street Deck
  • Hanover/3rd Street Deck (limited public parking available at this lot – this will be the first lot to fill during the Concerts)

Street Parking:

Meters: $1.25/hr (Parking meters are free after 6:30 PM on Friday, and all day Saturday and Sunday during Azalea Festival weekend).

Weather
All concerts are outdoor, rain or shine. In the event of rain, we advise ponchos and rain boots – no umbrellas will be allowed inside the venue. In the event of beautiful weather, we advise sunglasses and sunscreen.

Refund Policy
There will be no refunds. In the event the show is canceled due to extreme weather or artist cancellation, refunds will be processed within two weeks of the original show date.

Merchandise
North Carolina Azalea Festival merchandise will be sold at the concerts. The availability of artist merchandise depends on the artist and will be for sale separately.

Entry & Re-Entry
Upon entry, all handbags will be inspected. This is to ensure the safety of all our guests, and we would appreciate your cooperation with our team. There is no re-entry allowed. The concert venue has restrooms as well as food and beverage, including alcoholic beverages, available for sale.

Accessibility
All concerts are outdoor, standing room only. The venue is a paved, fenced-in area with a natural slope down to the stage. We don’t advise bringing blankets or anticipating being able to sit on the ground due to safety precautions. We acknowledge the special needs and challenges of some of our guests, and guests requiring special needs should notify the box office when purchasing tickets.

Children
Children of all ages will be permitted into the concert venue. Each person will need a concert ticket regardless of age, and we have that in place for safety purposes. The North Carolina Azalea Festival is not responsible for children at the concert, and please note that strollers are not permitted inside the venue.

Medical & Safety
Trained EMTs will be on-hand to address any and all medical incidents, and please don’t be afraid to ask for help from a staff member of volunteer – even if you just have a question. Additionally, if you see anyone who appears to be in need of medical assistance, please inform a member of our medical or security team. Police officers will be at the venue to ensure guest safety.

Food & Drinks
There will be food vendors inside the concert venue, as well as beverage tents with beer, wine, soft drinks, and water. Food and beverage is available for purchase with credit card, and a proper ID is required for all alcohol purchases.

Publicity Release
In consideration of attendance at North Carolina Azalea Festival at Wilmington, Inc. events –guests, volunteers, vendors, and all categories of people (all attendees) agree to permit the North Carolina Azalea Festival at Wilmington, Inc. to photograph, video, film, and record audio, using his or her likeness for publicity, advertising and commercial promotion of the North Carolina Azalea Festival and its events.  Attendees grant the North Carolina Azalea Festival at Wilmington, Inc. permission to publish, sell, or otherwise dispose of said photographs, films, or tapes at any time.

Ticket Information

Duran Duran will be on the Miller Lite Main Stage on Friday, April 7th. Tickets will go on sale Saturday, January 28th at 9:00AM online only, and on Monday, January 30th at 9:00AM at the Azalea Festival Ticket Office. Tickets are $68.50 and will increase to $78.50 the day of the show.
