Congratulations to Princess Haleigh Somberg!

Haleigh Somberg, a junior from E.A. Laney High School, was crowned the 2015 NC Azalea Festival Princess during the 67th Annual NC Azalea Festival Scholarship Pageant on Saturday, March 14th. The event was held at Kenan Auditorium on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Haleigh is the daughter of Steven Somberg and Linda Somberg. She and her court were selected from among 24 contestants representing 7 area high schools. The court members include the following: 1st Runner-Up from Cape Fear Academy, Raeven Goodman, 2nd Runner-Up, from E.A. Laney High School, Kendall Paige Moose, 3rdRunner-Up, from Coastal Christian High School, Valerie Lazaridis, and 4th Runner-Up, from Coastal Christian High School, Haley Lehn.

Haleigh has received numerous awards for academics, as well as athletics. Some of those include All-Region Team in NCCSA Girls’ Soccer, Academic Excellence Award and All-Conference Team for Volleyball. Haleigh participates in several clubs such as the Azalea Festival Youth Committee (where she is Treasurer), Beta Club, Student Council and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She is a small group leader at church and helps to feed the homeless on a regular basis. Haleigh enjoys playing volleyball and spending time with her family and friends. Later, she hopes to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill or Duke University to major in Health Sciences or Biology with the hopes of one day obtaining a degree in medicine and specializing in Anesthesiology.

Junior girls from area high schools compete for the title based on a private interview with judges, evening gown competition and on-stage presentation. BB&T and the Azalea Festival Youth Committee (AFYC) sponsor the NC Azalea Festival Princess. The Princess is the recipient of the Beverly Anne Jurgensen Scholarship Award, named after the beloved Past President of the NC Azalea Festival. AFYC conducts fundraisers year-round to obtain proceeds for the annual event and to present the pageant.
