Tori Mathew, a junior from Coastal Christian High School, was crowned the 2014 North Carolina Azalea Festival Princess during the 66th North Carolina Azalea Festival Scholarship Pageant on Saturday, March 8th.

The event was held at Kenan Auditorium on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Tori is the daughter of Rano and Anne Mathew. She and her court were selected from among 21 contestants representing seven area high schools.

Tori has received numerous awards and honors throughout high school. She is the recipient of the Timothy Award for Exemplary Leadership. She has also received Academic Achievement Awards in Honors Algebra II, Honors English II, and AP Psychology. In addition, she has been named MVP for Varsity Cross Country two years in a row. She participates in Honors Show Choir, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and leads a 5th Grade girls’ small group. In her spare time, she enjoys baking, reading, and writing short stories and songs. After her senior year, she would like to earn a PhD in Psychology or attend medical school to become a psychiatrist. She would also like to become fluent in Spanish.

Junior girls from area high schools compete for the title based on a private interview with judges, evening gown competition, and on-stage presentation. BB&T and the Azalea Festival Youth Committee (AYFC) sponsor the North Carolina Azalea Festival Princess. The Princess is the recipient of the Beverly Anne Jurgensen Scholarship Aware, named after the beloved Past President of the North Carolina Azalea Festival. AFYC conducts fundraisers year-round to obtain process for the annual event and to present the pageant.
