Who owns/manages the North Carolina Azalea Festival?
The North Carolina Azalea Festival is a non-profit organization that began in 1948 under the direction of several leading civic organizations.
How is the City of Wilmington involved with the North Carolina Azalea Festival?
While the City of Wilmington does not put on the Festival, we receive a lot of support from them. We work closely with both the City of Wilmington and New Hanover County representatives to ensure that interests of all parties are considered.
How is the North Carolina Azalea Festival structured?
As a non-profit organization, the Festival operates under a Board of Directors. Board members are volunteers who have served previously as a Committee Chair or Co-Chair. Since the Board functions as a ladder board, each Board member commits 6 years to the Azalea Festival Board and only serves as President during their 6th year. While this model ensures that the Festival President has extensive knowledge of their role, it also demonstrates loyalty and dedication to the team of volunteers they’re leading.
The Board of Directors lead over 80 volunteer committees with over 1,000 volunteers, a permanent staff of five, and a seasonal ticket office staff.
